Placing academic literacy at the forefront: How to write proper in-text citations and references

The American Psychological Association (APA) is responsible for regulating academic writing conventions, and as such, establishes a style for documenting sources and other authors' work in papers. In the light of the academic literacy requirements presented in the 6th edition of APA's (2010) Publication Manual, the purpose of this analysis is to reflect on the application of APA's guidelines on reference lists and in-text citations in the article Beyond Reflection: Teacher Learning as Praxis by Hoffman-Kipp, Artiles and López-Torres (2003). As for in-text citations, these are included within the body of academic papers and are used to give details of cited bibliography, such as authors' surnames, publication dates and, when quoting other authors' words directly, page numbers (APA, 2010). With regard to reference pages, APA (2010) states that they should be a comprehensive list of the literature cited in the body of the paper. After an examination of the article, we...

The learning of pronunciation through songs and dancing: A conjectural situated theory

This story is about a group of adult students at A2 level to whom I used to teach oral conversation skills. Many students had difficulties in pronouncing fluently and most of them became too tense when having to read texts aloud or when asked to communicate. While devising methods and techniques to help them overcome their underlying fear and inhibition, I thought of using a famous song by The Beatles to work on fluency in pronunciation. Once fully developed, my scheme was based on a conjecture which stated that dance and physical expression would promote body relaxation and, ultimately, fluency. At the beginning of the class, I told my students we were going to do something different and innovative that day. They were adults, and at first, they had a very critical look on their faces. As the lesson proceeded, their emotions and sensations varied. To begin with, we did some relaxation and breathing exercises while listening to some quiet music. Next, I made them listen to the song we...

Towards the construction of narrative knowledge in teacher education

Dolk, M., & D en Hertog, J. (2008). Narratives in teacher education. Interactive Learning Environments , 16 (3), 215-229. DOI : 10.1080/10494820802113970 In this paper, Dolk and Hertog (2008) maintain that narratives help teachers and student teachers construct local theories of events in real classroom situations through a cyclic process of observation, analysis and reflection . In their view, learning in teacher education programs is promoted through continual processes of reflection, which, in turn, form the basis for making meaning out of the observation of situated classroom events (Dolk & den Hertog, 2008). Through a process of observation, reflection and analysis, the student-teachers develop situated meaning of teaching processes and are able to construct narratives based on principles from education theory. As the authors state, “meaningful stories are paradigmatic” (Dolk & Hertog, 2008, p. 222). To conclude, helping students develop narrative knowledge enta...
